The following is a guest post by Kimberly King, author of the children's book, I SAID NO!
It's a sad day when you have to sit your kids down to warn them about being too trusting of coaches and mentors.
The Penn State sex-abuse scandal has people up in arms, and in some ways we find ourselves in a similar position as when the scandal in the Catholic church was exposed - stung by the realization of the extent to which people will go to conceal what they wish to deny.
Last night I had this very weird dream….I dreamed I was in a huge moral dilemma I can’t for the life of me remember what it was I just woke feeling the weight of the world on my back. In trying to figure out what the dream meant and what I was thinking about that could actually cause me to have a visceral feeling that I had not made the “right” choice as I awoke. I think back to the dinner conversation last night.
Driving home from football practice last night with my 11-year old son was a moment to which I’d given careful consideration.
I had similar moments throughout the years with his older sister when I’ve had to deliver news that kills a little bit of childhood innocence but I knew I had to talk to my son since the story is every where in the news. Penn State. Joe Paterno. Sex scandal.
By now everyone knows that the Penn State University coaches, administration and just about everyone involved with the football team turned a blind eye to the fact that Jerry Sandusky, their former defensive coordinator, was abusing children
I have a dream that I will wake up one day and there will not be a single story in the news about a child being abused.
Troy Davis was executed in Georgia at 11:08 pm last night.
I am not opposed to the death penalty. In fact, I strongly believe in the death penalty, when properly applied. And I can't help but think that in the case of Troy Davis, it was not.
Life gets crazy sometimes. Every day the news highlights the most recent crisis du jour, spinning out stories of the latest financial, political or environmental catastrophe. It's enough to make you crazy. Even without the gloomy stories on the news, our own lives are often enough to send us into a panic.
My Dad is a spitting image of Tim Allen - Tim Allen from Tool Time, how’s that for dating myself? Was the name of the show Tool Time or was that just the show on the show? Either way, my Dad is that character, although I’m not sure he would look as much like him, if their personalities didn’t seem so spot on.
When I asked my Dad if he knew what celebrity I thought he looked like, he said Pierce Brosnan (he’s going to kill me for saying that). But he’s kind of right, sort of, he’s a Pierce/Tim hybrid, with all "Tim the Tool Time" personality.
